National Tap Water Quality Database (http://www.ewg.org/tapwater...)
Do you know what's in your tap water? A study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that there are more than 140 contaminants with no enforceable safety limits found in the nation's drinking water. This graph shows the population (in millions) exposed to contaminants over the health limit by state. The EWG surveyed water systems in 42 states and found contaminants such as the gasoline additive MTBE, the rocket fuel component perchlorate, and a variety of industrial solvents lurking in your tap water. The pollution affects more than one hundred million people in the nation.

Polluted tap water also raises some alarms for long term health concerns. Of the 141 unregulated contaminants found, 52 are linked to cancer, 41 to reproductive toxicity, 36 to developmental toxicity, and 16 to immune system damage. The EWG warns that despite any potential health risks, any concentration of these unregulated chemicals in tap water is legal, no matter how high.
