In 2005, the whole world spent a whopping USD 3,426 billions of premiums for all forms of insurance (life and non-life), according to a study by Swiss Re. That number is about 7.7% of the world's GDP. Western Europe and North America spent the most premiums in volume, but more interestingly, how much do these numbers translate on a per capita basis? Well, this graph shows just that - that indeed it was Japan who spent the most premium on a per capita basis, followed of course by North America and Western Europe. In contrast, the emerging markets in Eastern Europe, Latin America and South-East Asia, are spending only about 50 to 150 USD of premiums per capita. Africa is the one region that finds insurance to be least important - people from there are only spending USD 44, in comparison to USD 3,746.7 in Japan. —Emil Valdez
