this is a really interesting chart; however, you should consider making it logarithmic, as that does a much better job of showing changes over time.

CPI fails to take into account many of the changes in the last 20 years:
like computers, which keep getting cheaper, or improvements to indexed products, like air bags, which add a small increase in cost but add significantly more value for the consumer.
The C-CPI-U, although based of the same raw data, tends to more accurately reflect cost of living and inflation.

Oh, and nice work!

Err, to be clear, the air bag was an improvement to an indexed product (cars) not one in and of itself. Sorry.

I was just going to put this same graph together. Nice job.

Although, some of the correlation is probably false. The postal service almost certainly uses inflation as an argument for being allowed to increase the price in postage...wages rarely keep up though.

The Black Penny stamp, also known as the Penny Black, was the first adhesive stamp to be used in the postal system. The Penny Black was the brainchild of Sir Rowland Hill in an attempt to reform the postal system. The stamp contained the word postage? and the denomination of the stamp, but there was no indication of the country name. The printing process of the Black Penny postage stamp required eleven plates.
